Pasadena Strawberry Festival, Pasadena

*Editor's Note: I know I am a little late but too bad.*

I've never been to the Strawberry Festival before.  I tell myself every year that I am going to go, but when the time comes,I am either broke, lazy, or some combination of both.  This year, with me being a part of the Pasadena community, I felt like I needed to go.  And I felt like I needed some Strawberry Shortcake in my belly.  So I load my boys into the car and off we go!  The Pasadena Fairgrounds are actaully pretty close to my work, so I have a good idea how to get there.  I pull into the parking lot and it is packed.  Sunday afternoon and this place is still hopping!  Sounds like good times for us.

We walk in and the kids zone is right to our left.  Naturally, that's where Nicholas wants to go so we head over that way.  First sign I see is this:

That makes me happy.  However, I heard that there is a place where the strawberry shortcake is the largest in the country and I don't see that in here.  Nicholas and Colin play in the jump-jump for a while and then he made this really cool sand art train engine.  The sand was all different colors and looked amazing when he was done.  After he finishes, we move on to the food area, which is my favorite part.

As we cruise by, there must have been like 43798468217321 strawberry stands so Nicholas convinces me to get some.  We get a small container and it was gone within 10 minutes.  They were big and delicious!  Even though they were warm they were bursting with flavor and were much better than anything you could find at the grocery store.  I know what you're thinking and yes, my hat is very cool thanks for noticing.

As we continued to stroll through Food Row, I quickly realized that I should rename this Fried Row.  Everything was being fried!  Now I am never one to discourage anything fried (I did eat a fried twinkie and fried okra at the Rodeo this year) but there is a limit to everything.  I am drawn to this booth for 2 reasons:  1) women in short shorts and boots are just really sexy; 2) I like fried stuff.  Fried bananas sound strangly dirty, fried oreos are strange, fried peanut butter and jelly sounds delicious but just a little heart-attacky, so I stick with the greatest thing every produced at a fair:  roasted corn.  Easily my favorite thing to eat at any fair/festival/grilling, especially when butter and seasoned salt are added.  If you have lemon pepper too then you are gnawing on a beautiful piece of undigestible heaven.

After trekking through Fried Row (my chest is hurting a little just remembering what I ate) we find our way to the carnival rides.  I let Nicholas play some games but one of the most amazing things happened when we went to the haunted house.  Nicholas REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY wanted to go, but I was a little apprehensive.  He talked me into it and when he was about to go in the door he got scared and asked me to go with him.  Well, I had Colin with me in the stroller and would need to go buy more tickets for all of us to go.  The ride operator looked at me and said, "Leave the stroller with me and you can go with your sons.  It's not scary for the baby."  He let me and Colin go for free and the three of us climbed through the house.  It wasn't scary at all, but Nicholas had such a good time I let him go 2 more times by himself.  The ride operator didn't have to do that and that was really nice of him to let me go with Nicholas for free.

Finally we reach the Mecca of the festival:  the convention center.  This is where people are selling their stuff and also where the ginormous strawberry shortcake is.  Yes you are seeing that correctly:  that cake was the width of those 2 tables and goes aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall the way down to the end.  I get in line, get 2 pieces, and roll out.  One piece was for a friend who couldn't make it, but the other piece was consumed by the three of us.  We had to leave soon after because the boys had an appointment but it was a great time had by all three of us. I am definitely looking forward to next year!!

I am festival junkie, so if you know of any festivals coming up then let me know.  I will write about it and if you don't mind, include you in the blog!  My e-mail is dsnb2008@gmail.com so drop me a line.  As always, comments are encouraged.  I love reading them and it helps motivate me to write more!  Where do you want me to go next?
