It's 8:30 and everyone is still asleep. I find it a small miracle since Colin has been waking up at 6am almost every day. I am getting hungry so it's time for my weekly stroll through DonutandKolacheLand. Where to go today? I drive by Ashley's. I almost go to Shipley's but their line in huge. Finally I decide to stop at Donald's Donuts on Gemini next to JSC Federal Credit Union.
As I drive up, I remember two things: 1) I am not getting any kind of profits even though my name is on it; 2) this place used to be Donuts, Inc. I park and realize why: the parking lot is empty. Now I know it is not in the greatest of locations, but empty? I hope the bank gives them a lot of business.
Danger sign #2: the donut cabinet is full. Every other place has slim pickings by the time 8:30 rolls around so I am concerned about my donut choice. I bravely stay, mostly because the guy behing the counter won't go more than 3 feet away from me. DAMN YOU SOCIAL PRESSURE!!
Danger sign #3: the interior is the same as it was when the place was Donuts, Inc. Nothing says successful business practice like keeping the interior design of the previous failed business. That reminds me, they didn't change the sign on the building, they just took off the "Inc" so it only says "donut.". That would it danger sign #2, which would force the others to be renumbered. Hmmm...I think we will just call it #4 because I don't want to cut and paste half of this blog.
Let's try this again: my bag of goodies smells delicioso (thanks Dora the Explorer in the background as I type this) so I get out a kolache at a red light. They are nice and warm so I am getting excited now. I take a bite...and...it's...average. Very disappointing. The bread is tasteless, not enough cheese, and the sausage is very average and small (giggling stops....now).
I'm sad now that my weekend purchase tuned out poor. I get home and decide to try the glazed donut, not expecting much. However, I was pleased to say it was very good. Soft, not too glazy, and really tasty. Colin liked both, but the donut more than the kolache. He has a sophisticated Donut Palette so I am not surprised he liked the donut more.
Overall, the place was average. Good donuts + weak kolaches + poor location does not equal a place I will return, even if it does have my name. As always, let me know what you think! Post comments either here or on Facebook. I look forward to hearing from you!!
