Riley's Donuts, Clear Lake

The wife went out with her friend Annie last night and partied until the brink of dawn, so when Colin woke up, he decided he wanted to go out for some breakfast.

I have this really cool program on my BlackBerry called "Poynt" which allows me to check out all businesses, look up movie times, and even look up phone numbers for people. Best part, it's FREE!! So we make our way to Clear Lake City Blvd and I ask Poynt to list the restaurants close to where we are. It pulls up a list and the first (non-chain) place is called "Coffee Haven" on Space Center Blvd. Sounds like a blast! It's only a half a mile away so we go there and...there is a banner hanging in front of the door that says, "For Lease." Strike 1. This place is right next to Cullen's, but I am currently jobless and they are not open yet so I'm not going there.

Ok Poynt, let's try again. Next interesting choice is Magnolia Cafe and Bakery on Fairmont. As we all know, I love baked goods so I am excited, but it's kind of far from home. I am pretty far down Space Center so I can see the Pasadena city line. I'm unsure but Colin taunts me from the back seat until I finally relent. We are driving there and I call to make sure they are still in business. i get a machine and it says they are open! I hear hours for Monday thru Friday, Saturday hours, and....CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. Strike 2.

Colin's in the back seat just laughing at me. I threaten to ground him, but it really doesn't work on an 18 month old. Then I remember...there was a donut shop next to that closed coffee place! Colin agrees on donuts and we turn around and drive back.

Clik here to view.By the time we get to the donut shop it's 9:15am and as you can see, the selection is...light. I don't mind because as I always say, "If you can't make a good plain, cake donut, you need to get out of the donut business." I also like to quote lines from "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot and "Pumps and a Bump" by MC Hammer, so take my words of wisdom with a grain a salt.

Clik here to view.I get 6 plain cakes, 3 chocolate cakes, and 3 white powder cake donuts. I also get a sausage and cheese kolache for Colin and a sausage and cheese croissant kolache for me.






This place shares an enclosed patio with a bar next door, so we sit outside to dine on our kolaches and chocolate milk.

Clik here to view.Mine was very good as well. The croissant was buttery but not too flaky. It also had a nice texture to it. Old croissants tend to get a little rubbery, so I was glad this one was fresh. I would have preferred a bigger sausage (stop laughing) but it was still very satisfying.




By the time I got back home, the ladies had finally woken up so they were very happy to see breakfast was ready. We all tore into the donuts. Colin had a plain cake, Annie had plain cake as well. Sarah loves her some chocolate donuts so she munched on those.

All in all, this was a really good donut shop. Not sure how it stays in business because I really didn't see many residental areas close by. It is right next to Cullen's, but I don't see how that would help their business either. Anyway, if you are on the Houston/Pasadena border while driving down Space Center Blvd, go check this place out. You will very pleasantly surprised!
